Filter Cake Too Wet: Eight Causes Ranked by How Often They Are the Answer
When a filter press delivers 28% moisture against a 15% target, the instinct is to raise pressure. That rarely helps, because most moisture is held in the filter cake’s pores and in the cloth, not squeezed out by more force. Work through these causes in order.
Ranked causes
| # | Cause | Evidence | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blinded or wrongly specified cloth | Filtrate rate fell over weeks; cloth feels stiff or glazed | Wash or replace; check weave and air permeability |
| 2 | No air blow / too short | Cake wet at the core, dry at the surface | Add 2–5 min air blow at 4–6 bar |
| 3 | Cycle too short | Cake thinner than design; press opened early | Extend fill and press times; verify against leaf test |
| 4 | Fines in feed | Cake slimy, filtrate cloudy | Flocculant, pre-thickening, or tighter upstream classification |
| 5 | Low solids in feed | Long fill, thin cake | Thicken feed before filtration |
| 6 | Wrong wash sequence | High residual soluble salts | Counter-current wash, or displace before blow |
| 7 | Chamber design | Cake uneven, corners wet | Membrane plates with squeeze |
| 8 | Pressure too low | Cake still compressible, filtrate flowing | Raise gradually; stop when filtrate stops |
Why the cloth matters more than the pump
A cloth that has lost permeability restricts flow, so the cake never consolidates and the blow air channels through cracks instead of displacing water. If the press ran well and degraded over months, the cloth is the first suspect, not the hydraulic system.
Measure before changing
Run a leaf test on the actual slurry. It returns cake thickness versus time and achievable moisture at a given pressure — the only reliable basis for setting cycle times. Changing three variables at once and hoping is how plants spend a month chasing moisture.
One quick win
If you have no air blow, add it. On many non-compressible mineral cakes, a 3-minute blow at 5 bar removes 5–8 percentage points of moisture with no other change. It is the cheapest moisture reduction available.
Send the slurry solids, PSD, target moisture and current cycle, and we will specify the press configuration and cloth.
