Process Flowsheet
also known as flow diagram · process scheme
A process flowsheet shows every unit operation in sequence, the streams between them, and the key flow rates, concentrations and temperatures at each point. It is normally accompanied by a mass balance, so that the figures on the diagram can be checked against each other. A block flowsheet gives the topology; a piping and instrumentation diagram adds the equipment detail and control loops.
Why it matters in practice
The flowsheet is the document that reveals whether a design is self-consistent — whether recycle streams close, whether water balances, and whether the concentration factor the extraction circuit claims is actually achieved. Most expensive design errors are visible on the flowsheet before any equipment is bought.
